RGR Landscape developed a landscape plan for the new Mott Haven Campus in the Bronx, which comprises several separate schools located on a 6.5-acre site. The site has a rich artisanal and industrial history, examples of which are still evident in the neighborhood. Inspired in part by a 25-foot-high stone retaining wall that borders the western edge of the site, RGR’s landscape plan for this new campus evokes both the geology and history of the area. RGR’s scope included all exterior paving, site walls, lighting, planting, and exterior fencing. Long tiers of seat walls and planters echo the solidity and texture of the indigenous rock. The ground level courtyard is organized around a diagonal grid of single-stemmed trees in a paved plaza that provide a canopy for shade and allow for more organic movement through the space.
