The NYC EDC, NYC Parks & Recreation, and the Randall’s Island Sports Foundation commissioned RGR Landscape to implement the second phase of the Randall’s and Wards Island Park Access Plan, which featured the Little Hell Gate Cove Elevated Boardwalk and Bridge. This new pedestrian structure connects Randall’s Island to Wards Island and provides a key link in the waterfront path system around the two islands. The elevated boardwalk structure spans 500 feet of upland landfill and bridges 80 feet of a tidal inlet that originally separated the two islands. In addition to the boardwalk and bridge construction, this project involved the reclamation of more than two acres of abandoned rubble landfill to create new grassland and wetland habitat for the migrating songbirds, nesting birds, and waterfowl that inhabit the island. As an educational opportunity for schoolchildren to experience and learn about nature, RGR also designed interpretive graphic panels that describe the wetland reclamation project as well as some of the vegetation and wildlife.
