RGR designed the landscape for the new Glenville Elementary School in Greenwich, Connecticut and played a key role in the local approvals process. To maximize the amount of daylight reaching the interior spaces, the site plan includes two outdoor courtyards, each of which acts as an extension of its adjacent interior space. For the Art/Music Courtyard, RGR designed a wood deck and seating wall that functions as a stage or a place to sketch outdoors. The Cafeteria/Library Courtyard has benches that allow children to lunch outside at mid-day or read quietly during other times of day. Both courtyards utilize a rich assortment of natural, textured materials including stone, pebbles, wood and a diverse palette of plants to create an intimate setting and to make nature visible and accessible from the classrooms and hallways.
