RGR Landscape, in collaboration with Gensler, designed three outdoor rooftop terrace environments for the enjoyment of staff and guests at Etsy’s new headquarters in downtown Brooklyn, NY. The planting design was inspired by three different native plant communities – a meadow, a woodland floor, and a vineland. Plants native to the Northeast were selected to ensure they would be well-adapted to the local environment and would create viable habitat for insects and birds. Materials used in the construction meet the requirements of the Living Building Challenge, including the use of FSC certified lumber, and where possible, are regionally sourced. The planted areas are irrigated with rainwater captured from nearby rooftop spaces.
