RGR Landscape worked with Chelsea Piers and Allen+Killcoyne Architects to develop a new land-scape vision for the waterfront walkway that connects the three outdoor segments of the Chelsea Piers complex on the west side of Manhattan, which extends for approximately 700 feet along the Hudson River waterfront. The goal of the project was to enhance the pedestrian experience by providing substantially more seating and green space while maintaining adequate circulation for the large numbers of walkers, runners, and bikers that traverse the walkway. RGR’s new landscape vision featured continuous curvilinear planters along the base of each of the Chelsea Piers buildings to: (1) soften the effect of the large buildings, (2) provide ample seating with views of the river, and (3) allow unencumbered access to the waterfront. The new planters create space for a variety of trees, shrubs, and perennials for all-season interest and color. In addition, the planters incorporate a series of inset wood benches spaced at frequent intervals along the entire length of the walkway.
