Projects: Parks and Plazas

Maiden Lane Plaza
New York, New York

RGR worked as part of a multidisciplinary team, on behalf of Olympia and York Properties, to renovate the public entry plaza for the Home Insurance building in lower Manhattan.

In addition to a new paved pedestrian plaza, the design includes a large planter bordering William Street and Maiden Lane, creating a landscaped buffer between the public sidewalk and the enclosed plaza. Since the plaza and planter are supported above an existing basement space, major trees were placed to coincide with the column grid to meet loading requirements. In the areas between columns, soil depths were reduced and plants were selected accordingly.

The planting plan incorporates a variety of native and ornamental plant life. Both city-tolerant and shade-tolerant species were used to withstand the harsh conditions of the somewhat hostile urban environment.
