Union Life Wuhan Health Community
Wuhan, Hubei province, People’s Republic of China

RGR Landscape (RGR) was retained by Union Life Insurance (ULI) to develop a conceptual design for a 160 hectare (400 acre) Union Life Health Community as well as schematic design and design development documents for a 16 hectare phase 1 site, in Wuhan, Hubei province, People’s Republic of China.
The conceptual landscape approach for the overall site greenway system has been developed to complement and support ULI’s previously prepared conceptual master plan. The primary objectives of the greenway system are to 1) promote a healthy life-style for residents of all ages and abilities; 2) to facilitate interaction and communication among all the residential communities; and 3) to promote environmental preservation and stewardship through sustainable design practices. In order to achieve these goals, the greenway concept calls for the development of four activity nodes where residents can perform a wide range of physical, cultural, and spiritual activities.
The landscape concept for the first phase is based on sustainable site initiatives and includes a gradual transition from natural native plantings along the site boundaries to more decorative and ornamental plants and planting schemes at the interior of the project site. The landscape design complements the style and character of the architecture of this new health community. The overall goal of the landscape plan is to create a unified composition of constantly changing views and to use plants in such a way that, in the words of Gertrude Jekyll, “they shall form beautiful pictures” and a healthy outdoor environment for the residents of this new community.
