Projects: Schools and Campuses

The American University of Sharjah School
University City, Sharjah Municipality, United Arab Emirates

The American University of Sharjah School (AUSS) is a private, international, K-12 campus located in University City, Sharjah Municipality, United Arab Emirates. The development of AUSS is a phased project, the first of which comprises academic and site facilities for central administration services and 800 kindergarten through 8th grade students. Subsequent phases include the development of academic and site facilities for the middle and high schools as well as faculty housing and associated site facilities.
RGR Landscape (RGR) was subcontracted by Perkins Eastman Architects to complete the landscape architecture for the entire phase one campus. This project involves designing a main entry and formal garden to receive dignitaries; exterior corridors named “pedestrian streets” that are inspired by “wadis,” an arabic term that refers to dry riverbeds; citrus trees and vegetable garden beds where students can learn about planting and irrigation; play areas inspired by the native, dessert landscape; and interior courtyards with gathering areas, grass slopes, and seating. For this project, RGR performed a careful study of Islamic garden traditions and architecture, as well as of the dessert climate and the region’s landscape, native plants, and practices of irrigation. This research resulted in a contemporary landscape response that is sensitive to culture, history, and the specific programmatic needs of a school in an arid climate. The firm worked closely with the architects to design outdoor spaces that complement and enhance interior spaces.
