Pelham Bay Salt Marsh Habitat Restoration
Bronx, New York

RGR worked with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation (NYC DPR) Natural Resources Group to implement the restoration of a salt marsh in Pelham Bay Lagoon. Funded in part by the New York State Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act as administered by the New York State Department of State (NYS DOS), Division of Coastal Resources, the project's primary goals included the preservation of the existing shoreline, the provision of a diverse habitat for wildlife, and the establishment of self-sustaining native plant communities not prone to invasion by exotic species. RGR implemented strategies to increase the areas of mudflat habitat, low marsh vegetation, and high marsh vegetation. The plan returned the land to grade elevations that favor inter-tidal plant communities and installed new vegetation appropriate to those communities to prevent erosion, absorb flood flows, and provide breeding areas for indigenous wildlife.
