Milton Road Residence: Historic Restoration/Addition
Rye, New York

RGR designed the restoration of and addition to an existing historic structure in the Town of Rye. The original structure on the property was built as a tavern in 1740, with a second floor having been added some years later. In 1820, a three-story residential addition was constructed and joined to the original building.

Though some of the interior spaces were quite charming, the overall structure was disorganized and ungainly. Thus, the design effort focused on ways to reorganize the interior spaces to serve the client's needs and to develop the massing and detailing of the exterior to more successfully integrate the two structures as a unified composition.

RGR's design includes the addition of a second and third story to the original 1740 structure with rooflines, gables, and trim detailing that matches the 1820 residential building. New porches act as unifying elements, allowing the delicate railings and shadows to reduce the apparent scale of the building.
