Little Hell Gate Cove: Boardwalk and Bridge
Randall's and Wards Islands, New York

The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, and the Randall's Island Sports Foundation commissioned RGR to implement the Randall's Island Access Plan developed to provide island-wide waterfront access. The Little Hell Gate Cove Elevated Boardwalk and Bridge provides a key link in a waterfront path system designed to provide non-vehicular access to the underutilized recreational resources of Randall's Island Park.

The boardwalk structure spans 500 feet of upland landfill, bridging across 80 feet of a tidal inlet to connect to a waterfront path system. In addition to the boardwalk construction, environment enhancement efforts include the establishment of native plants to include upland grasses, under-story shrubs, and canopy trees to accommodate the migrating songbirds, nesting birds, and waterfowl that live on the island. The evolution of the rubble landfill into a natural habitat area for songbirds, wildfowl, and marine invertebrates is highlighted with a series of custom interpretive graphic panels.
